The mosque was founded by Syed Abdul Rahman bin Shaikh Alkaff, head of the prominent Alkaff family of Yemeni Arab merchants. It underwent major renovation and expansion in March 2014, which included adding ramps and a lift for elderly accessibility. The architectural design features Moorish-style horseshoe arches, Corinthian-inspired columns, and an Ottoman-influenced minaret.
