The Morning Star · Surah 86 · 17 verses · Meccan

  1. 1

    Wassamaaa'i wattaariq

By the sky and the night comer -

  2. 2

    Wa maaa adraaka mattaariq

And what can make you know what is the night comer?

  3. 3

    Annajmus saaqib

It is the piercing star -

  4. 4

In kullu nafsil lammaa 'alaihaa haafiz

There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.

  5. 5

    Fal yanzuril insaanu mimma khuliq

So let man observe from what he was created.

  6. 6

    Khuliqa mim maaa'in daafiq

He was created from a fluid, ejected,

  7. 7

    Yakhruju mim bainissulbi wat taraaa'ib

Emerging from between the backbone and the ribs.

  8. 8

    Innahoo 'alaa raj'ihee laqaadir

Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able.

  9. 9

    Yawma tublas saraaa'ir

The Day when secrets will be put on trial,

  10. 10

Famaa lahoo min quwwatinw wa laa naasir

Then man will have no power or any helper.

  11. 11

    Wassamaaa'i zaatir raj'

By the sky which returns [rain]

  12. 12

    Wal ardi zaatis sad'

And [by] the earth which cracks open,

  13. 13

    Innahoo laqawlun fasl

Indeed, the Qur'an is a decisive statement,

  14. 14

    Wa maa huwa bil hazl

    And it is not amusement.

  15. 15

    Innahum yakeedoona kaidaa

Indeed, they are planning a plan,

  16. 16

    Wa akeedu kaidaa

But I am planning a plan.

  17. 17

    Famahhilil kaafireena amhilhum ruwaidaa

So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.

1. Introduction to Surah At-Tariq

Surah At-Tariq is the 86th chapter of the Noble Quran, consisting of 17 short yet profoundly impactful verses. Revealed during the early Makkan period, this beautiful chapter immediately captures the listener's attention by drawing powerful parallels between the vast, mysterious cosmos and the internal reality of human existence. The word At-Tariq itself is translated as "The Night-Comer" or "The Piercing Star," referring to a brilliant celestial body that cuts through the deep darkness of the night sky, symbolizing how divine truth cuts through human ignorance.

During the time this chapter was revealed, the early Muslims in Makkah faced immense emotional and physical challenges from opponents of Islam. In this historical context, learning about Surah At-Tariq served as a profound source of comfort, reassurance, and validation for believers. By highlighting the ultimate power of Allah over creation, resurrection, and human destiny, this chapter reminds us that no human action goes unnoticed and that the truth of the Creator will always prevail over temporary worldly hardships.

2. Key Themes and Lessons of Surah At-Tariq

As we dive deeper into the rhythmic verses of Surah At-Tariq, we uncover several core themes that can transform how we view our purpose in this world:

  • Divine Accountability and Protection: The chapter opens with a solemn oath by the heavens and the piercing star, establishing that every single human soul has a guardian angel assigned over it to record actions, ensuring that nothing we do is ever lost or forgotten.
  • The Miracle of Human Creation: Allah commands mankind to reflect upon their humble beginnings, reminding us that we were created from a fluid ejected. This serves as a logical proof that the Creator who brought us into existence from nothing can easily resurrect us on the Day of Judgment.
  • The Revealing of Secrets: A central message of Surah At-Tariq is the reminder of a day when all hidden thoughts, intentions, and secrets will be thoroughly examined and laid bare, leaving mankind with no personal power or worldly helpers.
  • The Absolute Truth of the Quran: The text describes the Quran as a decisive word that separates truth from falsehood, rather than a matter of amusement or trivial poetry.
  • The Ultimate Divine Plan: The chapter concludes by reassuring believers that while the disbelievers design complex plots against the truth, Allah is also executing a perfect plan, advising the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to be patient and grant them a little time.
