    Wassamaaa'i zaatil burooj

By the sky containing great stars

    And [by] the promised Day

    Qutila as haabul ukhdood

Cursed were the companions of the trench

  5. 5

    Annaari zaatil waqood

[Containing] the fire full of fuel,

  6. 6

    Iz hum 'alaihaa qu'ood

When they were sitting near it

  7. 7

Wa hum 'alaa maa yaf'aloona bilmu 'mineena shuhood

And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses.

  8. 8

Wa maa naqamoo minhum illaaa aiyu'minoo billaahil 'azeezil Hameed

And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,

  9. 9

To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness.

  10. 10

Innal lazeena fatanul mu'mineena wal mu'minaati summa lam yatooboo falahum 'azaabu Jahannama wa lahum 'azaabul hareeq

Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

  11. 11

Innal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati lahum Jannaatun tajree min tahtihal anhaar; zaalikal fawzul kabeer

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. That is the great attainment.

    Inna batsha Rabbika lashadeed

Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.

1. Introduction to Surah Al-Buruj

Surah Al-Buruj is the 85th chapter of the Holy Quran and stands as an incredibly powerful testament to the ultimate power of faith and the certainty of divine justice. The title Al-Buruj translates directly to "The Constellations" or "The Great Stars," referencing the vast, organized celestial bodies that Allah swears by in the opening verse. This chapter uses the scale of the cosmos to remind humanity that while worldly tyrants may rule over small patches of earth for a short time, the supreme authority over the entire universe belongs to God alone.

Revealed during the Meccan period, this moving Surah came down at a time when the early Muslim community faced severe, intense persecution at the hands of the Quraysh leadership. By recounting the historic and tragic story of the "People of the Ditch" (Ashab al-Ukhdud)—believers from a past era who chose to be thrown into a burning trench rather than renounce their faith—the chapter provided critical psychological comfort. It assured the struggling companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that their sacrifices were witnessed by heaven and would be beautifully rewarded.

  • The Unstoppable Grip of God: Verse 12 introduces a chilling reminder that the grasp and strike of your Lord is exceptionally severe, proving that no tyrant, no matter how armed or powerful, can escape divine justice.
  • Historical Continuity of Tyranny: The text references the historical downfalls of Pharaoh and the tribe of Thamud, reminding the Meccan persecutors that they are not unique and will face the same destruction as the arrogant empires before them.
  • The Preserved Tablet (Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz): The chapter concludes by elevating the status of the Holy Quran, declaring it a magnificent book safely kept in a secure, unalterable heavenly tablet.
